Impaired Glucose Tolerance
-
A condition in which blood glucose levels are between normal levels and levels seen in diabetes. This often precedes the onset of type 2 diabetes.

Insulin
-
A hormone that is produced by Beta-cells in the pancreas. It plays a major role in the control of blood glucose levels in the body.

Insulin Resistance
-
Occurs when the body is unable to use and respond to the insulin that it produces. Insulin resistance is linked to obesity, hypertension, and high levels of fat in the blood.

Insulin Resistance Syndrome
-
A theory that was devised to explain the key risk factors for cardiovascular disease, including diabetes, hypertension, and lipid disorders. It is believed that insulin resistance is the underlying cause of all these factors.

Insulin Sensitivity
-
The way in which cells respond to a certain dose of insulin by lowering blood glucose levels.

Islets of Langerhans
-
Groups of cells in the pancreas that make hormones that allow the body to break down and use food. For example, alpha cells make glucagon and beta cells make insulin.
