What is Rosiglitazone?

Rosiglitazone Maleate is a Thiazolidinedione class anti-diabetic drug that is marketed under the brand name Avandia by the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKlein. The drug is designed to treat Type 2 diabetes and is one of the most commonly prescribed drugs for patients with that disease.

What Are the Side Effects of Avandia?

The federal Food and Drug Administration has recognized several side effects associated with use of the drug Avandia (Rosiglitazone Maleate). They include:

• Weight gain
• Cough or cold
• Headache
• Inflammation of the sinuses
• Back pain
• Swelling or fluid retention
• Increased incidence of bone fractures especially in women
• Increased risk of cardiac arrest.

Should Patients Be Concerned About the Recently Published Rosiglitazone Maleate Information?

On May 21, 2007, the FDA released very important Avandia information, constituting an Avandia warning. In this warning, the FDA acknowledged a 43 percent increased risk of cardiac arrest among those patients taking Avandia for Type 2 Diabetes. While the FDA did not go so far as to recommend a Rosiglitazone Maleate recall, it did caution patients with heart conditions taking Avandia. This would include patients who have Primary Pulmonary Hypertension (PPH). While there is no distinct negative link between Avandia and PPH, due to the increased cardiac risk possible posed by Avandia, patients with any cardiac condition should be aware of the significant possible risk.

Will There Be A Rosiglitazone Maleate Recall?

Though the FDA has not taken any steps toward recommending a Rosiglitazone Maleate recall, anyone who has taken Avandia or any drug containing Rosiglitazone should pay attention to any Rosiglitazone Maleate news. This news could come in the form of future FDA warnings, or possible news of a Rosiglitazone Maleate class action suit to be filed against GlaxoSmithKlein.
