Avandia Recall
Has There Been An Avandia Recall?
Although the Type 2 diabetes drug Avandia has been the subject of much media attention as a result of a medical study linking it with increased risk of heart attack, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not issued any Avandia recall. The study, the results of which were released in May 2007 by the New England Journal of Medicine, did claim a 46 percent higher risk of heart attack in Avandia patients, as well as a 64 percent higher risk of death from cardiac related events. Given the uncertainty surrounding the New England Journal of Medicine study and its possible serious implications, the FDA did issue an updated safety warning for the drug in late May 2007. However, because the FDA states that there exists more data from other Avandia studies requiring further analysis, the agency has not issued any Avandia recall. Specifically, there does exist a study conducted by an HMO that showed no correlation between any of the 30,000 participants and any increased incidence of heart attack that could lead to an Avandia recall.
Is It Possible There Could Be An Avandia Recall?
Though as of June 2007, there has been no widespread Avandia recall, Avandia patients all over the United States are finding themselves concerned about how to react to news that this drug prescribed to millions of Americans may be dangerous. Many patients may worry that despite the lack of a full Avandia recall immediately following the latest study from the New England Journal of Medicine, there may in fact be an Avandia recall sometime in the future. Ultimately however, Type 2 diabetes patients should consult with their physicians regarding their individual Type 2 diabetes cases to determine what impact the possible negative side effects of Avandia might have. It remains to be seen whether there will ever be an Avandia recall, much like the Vioxx recall that occurred in 2004, however the repercussions of any possible Avandia recall could in fact be very serious.
How Can Patients Learn More About the Impact of A Possible Avandia Recall?
The best source of information for any diabetes patient currently taking Avandia will always be the physician who originally prescribed the drug. However, if anyone who has been prescribed Avandia and has suffered from what they believe to be the negative side effects of Avandia, it could be in their best interest to consider the legal ramifications of a possible Avandia recall. Patients who had been taking Vioxx prior to 2004 still continue to pursue legal action against that drug's manufacturer, years after its recall. If there is to be an Avandia recall, impossible to know at this point to be sure, patients could benefit extremely from consultation with an experienced Avandia attorney at a reputable Avandia law firm.
