Osteoperosis and Avandia

New Risks: Osteoporosis in Avandia Patients

In addition to heart-related risk, Avandia has been linked to increased bone fractures and osteoporosis. Reports from new research that surfaced in late 2007 indicate that Avandia affects the way that bone cells are replenished in the body, preventing the body from regenerating bone structure more quickly that it breaks down. Increased risk of fractures has been an known side-effect of Avandia for some time, but until recently, researches and physicians were unaware of Avandia's interference with the bone regrowth process

How Avandia Affects Bone Cells

While bones appear to be consistently solid, they are actually broken down and rebuilt continuously. Two kinds of cells are at work in the body to replenish bone: osteoclasts and osteoblasts. Osteoclasts break down bone and osteoblasts build bone. It is now known that Avandia not only inhibits the work of osteoblasts, it actually stimulates the production of osteoclasts. This changes the balance of bone degrading and bone replenishing in the body, weakening the bones and leaving Avandia users at risk for fractures, breaks, and osteoporosis.

At particular risk for bone fractures and osteoporosis are female and elderly Avandia users, who already have a higher risk of weakened/thinning bones.
